Simple tips

0-12 months

  • Let them touch, smell, or even chew the books. Your baby learns using their senses.
  • Choose board books, textured books, or picture books.
  • Show them images, particularly of other babies, and describe them.

1-3 years old

  • Initiate your child to the basic movements associated with reading, like holding a book and turning pages.
  • Read their favourite books often, so they learn and remember the words.
  • Stop once in a while to ask them questions. That teaches them to better understand and listen.

3-5 years old

  • Ask your child to imagine what comes after the story you just told them.
  • Get the picture books back out, so they can start to “photograph” the simple words from day-to-day life. This is a first step towards reading.
  • Images and stories allow them to see themselves in the characters. They will tell you what they experience by seeing the events in the book.
