Supporting literacy in early childhood, a great investment!

Whether we consider its importance for effective participation in society or in the child’s global development, developing literacy in early childhood is a great strategy!

According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, exposing children to books in early childhood appears to encourage early reading and results in better reading and writing abilities in school. It is a good strategy to fight against early school leaving.

Introduction to reading

Introducing your child to reading means, first and foremost, discovering the fun of reading.

Introduction to reading starts well before a child starts school. It’s by practising it daily, in a natural and informal way, with their family and in their social environment, that children discover that world.

Children who spend time with books by themselves at 2½ years old:

  • will be more motivated by reading when they enter school
  • will have learned good reading practices by 8 years old
  • will have better school results by 15 years old

Early reading practices set the stage for future literacy, reducing the possibility of failure in reading tests and improving academic success chances.

Research shows that the majority of students who drop out of school know failure in their reading skill as early as in their first grade.
